BRUSH WEEK: Friday

I like the title because it sounds like "rush week". I'm not condoning, endorsing or dissing the Greek system in universities and colleges. I just like the way the words sound.

WOO HOOOO! We Made It!
Well THAT was a short month....seems to happen every year.

The day is named after the Norse God Odin, don'cha know. Inching toward the weekend:)

Most of us dread Mondays, so I drew to fit the zeitgiest....I have Mondays off. Admittedly I don't always feel energetic on Mondays, but at least I can recover a bit.

Happy Day

Did somebody say "Friday"?

Just a doodle...when it was finished I thought "This guy reminds me of somebody I might know". I'm still at that stage where I would experience powerful angst and much technical difficulty in making up my mind to draw a specific someone and then do it.
I did learn a couple of things with this doodle and see how I would change it already. Some of the little touches I picked up I might try again.

Whatever Wednesday

Henri experiences ennui

Just some simple line drawing today. I enjoy drawing that curl of the lower lip combined with a droopy lower eye lid. Strange hobby, eh?

Valentine's Day-A Sequel?

Valentine's Day 2014
My sweetie and I ventured out and went to a nice little restaurant a few miles up the road. We thought it would be fun to reprise the photo we took when we were dating (see yesterday's post). New technology and a savvy photographer combined for a nice picture. The photographer has set up a nice little area with backdrops and lights so she can take pictures of various spinning, knitting and weaving projects she's done.

Hope you all had a wonderful Valentine's Day.

Happy Valentine's Day

Valentines Day, 1994
Before selfies, smartphones, and Photoshop, Sharon improvised an ingenious way to photograph of us after our lovely dinner date at a fancy schmancy restaurant with some dear friends. Less than two months later we were engaged to be married. Now twenty years later...here we are. Where does the time go?

Left, right and center

You might have seen the article in the Atlantic Magazine that demonstrates the way most of us mug for the camera. We put our left side in profile believing that's our 'best' side. One theory posits that because the right side of the brain governs the left side of the body and the right side of the brain is the center of emotional impulses the left side of the face would naturally be more expressive. The sampling of photos and famous portraits yields a 70% occurrence of left facing posers.

Then there's the bartster's sketch book. I bet the ratio of left to right is reversed! Most of my little nebbishes that are profile or 3/4 face right. Do I draw left to right? Not really. I often start with the nose and work toward the ear (right to left). Am I right? Have I left something out? Am I off center (centre in Canada and the UK)?

Things I should have learned in art school--First: I didn't go to art school!

Dude, how do they do shading in the big leagues?
I am revisiting some of my how-to books including the one by Mad Magazine caricature master Tom Richmond. The information about anatomy and even human nature is worth the read. His instruction and ideas about drawing are amazing. I was sampling a few suggestions and thought I'd try them for myself.

I've been struggling with upper eyelids and their relation to the brow. Yeah, I know, get out more.

Way back Weekend

Dad and lil' brother
Dad was born February 9 ninety one years ago. He's been gone ten years in May. Dad was in his early forties when this snap was taken. My younger brother, now in his late forties, looks a lot like Dad did in this photo. Birthday greetings to Romie Stephens, part of my wife's family (and now ours) for a long time. Hoist a coffee at First Watch for me, Romie!

It's Friday, ya know

Dog Friday
I work most weekends including Friday. Not today. Despite working Fridays and often Saturdays and Sundays I still feel a little excitement and anticipation at the prospect of a weekend.

Today I'll be getting pots ready to glaze and maybe even drawing on some bowls and mugs using my new glaze pencils I received at Christmas.

Throwback Thursday

The most ornate guitar I have owned
I have two guitars now (a ukulele and a nose flute too) that I play for fun. Never quite got past the version of stage fright that freezes the left hand, so I don't play in front of people very much at all. I play to relax and unwind and am truly an amateur. If you look up the word history for the word "amateur" you'll find it's related to the root "amo", to love. As I go through life I relish my amateur status in many areas of life.

Context

Uhhh guys....I think the cartoonist put my gills one backwards!
We were watching the documentary "Inside Job" about the financial crisis of 2008. As I saw people being interviewed consistently shrug off questions about conscience, my pencil offered its own commentary.

Maybe Caricature

Owen Wilson?
As soon as I did the nose and jawline, I decided we had a resemblance to the Wilson brothers (not Woodrow). So I added the other details that I thought might suggest the comic actor's appearance.

Groundhog Day

Only six more MONTHS of Winter!
I think I have tried to recycle this joke about Groundhog's Day as often Bill Murray's character in the movie titled after the big day lived the same day over and over. Eventually, the joke will be funny; perhaps in a parallel universe?
